Contemporary dance...What is it?
Contemporary dance being one of the most dominant dance forms throughout the world It was developed during the mid of the twentieth century and is one of the most practiced dance forms in the world.Particularly this form of dance has its popularity from United States and Europe.
There is always a confusion about this dance form as it is very improvisational and keep creating new methods and discoveries .This dance form is not at all static rather inclusive and malleable.
This dance form being in India is both western and classical too.
As the tittle suggests this dance form is originally formed by borrowing from Classical , ballet and Jazz dance forms.As it is very improvised form of dance it includes the features of many dance forms and even now it is creating its own discoveries.The dancers of this form of dance are formally trained and primarily focuses on the technical area about the dance.
Since it incorporates the elements of different dance form people sometimes perceive it to be a modern dance,But this is not true.This dance form has similarities with the modern dance forms but it has its own technicalities and discoveries.It contemporary dance tends to combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern that stresses on torso.It also combines the floor work ,contract release ,falls and recovery etc . It also has unpredictable change in the speed and rhythm for which the dancers has to be very vesatile.
The first choreographer who introduced this dance form was Merce Cunningham ,he developed the independent attitude towards the modern dance in the year 1994
Characteristics features of Contemporary dance...
As this dance form is very improvisational it must include some features and characteristics with it.Therefore here I am going to provide you with some common features of this dance form.
- Grounded movements of the body.
- True facial expressions other than smiling while dancing
- Themes are used for movements.
- Exploring while dancing
- Accents in movement (sudden or even sharp movements in the midst of slow, smooth movement)
- Elements and interesting movements of many dance forms.
- A basis in technique but a focus on execution and “feeling” the movement
- Natural body movements too.
