Having its origin in the Indian state of Assam, Bihu dance is an indigenous traditional dance which is related to the festival Bihu which is the important part of Assamese culture.
In my previous posts I wrote about several folk dances, their facts, their origins, and many more things,here I would like my readers to get some knowledge about this folk dance which is done simply and beautifully done, Here I would like to remind my readers that folk dance is something which defines your culture, So this dance basically defines the simplicity of Assamese culture.
Bihu dance,what is it?
Performed by both young men and women,it a group dance performance mainly characterized by brisk steps and the rapid hand movements.This dance mainly have hand movements which are beautifully and gracefully done.The Bihu festivals in which this dance is performed are primarily divided into three festivals ,those are known as Rongali Bihu, Kongali Bihu and Bhogali Bihu,This dance is mainly performed in Rongali bihu.These festivals are celebrated in Assam from the beginning of Spring season,In which both men and women participates actively.
The style of this dance form is unique in every sense.On one hand ,the women dances and on the other hand the men beat the drums(dholes)to give them rhythm to dance. The music which accompanies this dance is known as Bihu song,which has unique rhythms and beats.
Music plays a very important role in this dance,There are many instruments that are utilized during a Bihu performance namely a dhol, pepa, Taal, toka, xutuli, gogona and baanhi.
This dance is very eye catching and signifies the happiness of the assamese people.
Clothing and attire.
Every folk dance is incomplete without its costumes,so Bihu dance also has its unique costumes which signifies its simplicity and culture.
The women performer wears a Chador(kind of saree),which is beautifully draped according to Assamese tradition it is mostly have its base as cream or off white color and have its border with red color.They wear a blouse beneath the chador made up of different type of silk fabric.They accompany their cloths with heavy jewelry ,which decorates their neck,hand and their hairs.Also the big red bindi(dot) on the forehead is compulsory.
Coming to male performers ,so they wear Dhoti(a long cloth )which covers the lower body of the performer and Gamocha(head cloth)which covers the head of the performers.They both are brightly colored and beautifully embroidered.
